El estado nutricional de la mujer embarazada es uno de los numerosos factores potenciales que interactúan para determinar la progresión y el resultado de la gestación.

Se han investigado los efectos de la desnutrición en poblaciones previamente bien nutridas, como ocurrió durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial en muchos países de Europa, que fueron sometidas a una privación alimentaria grave. Esta misma situación podemos observarla hoy día en algunos trastornos de la conducta alimentaria (TCA) vinculados a malnutrición.
