La terapia respiratoria y sus cuidados suponen un reto en el campo de la enfermería pediátrica. El diseño de dispositivos y sistemas de monitorización que acompañan a la terapéutica respiratoria, se ha venido desarrollando desde la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Hablamos, por tanto, de avances relativamente recientes y que abren un mundo de posibilidades a la investigación tanto médica como en cuidados de enfermería.

La mayor tecnificación en las unidades neonatales ha permitido bajar progresivamente la edad gestacional de los pacientes a los que atendemos, por lo que la terapia respiratoria está en el epicentro de la neonatología, así como en la infancia en general, debido a los picos asistenciales de patología infecciosa respiratoria estacional. Nos enfrentamos por tanto a patologías muy diversas, en pacientes de características muy diferentes y es, por tanto, fundamental conocer y dominar los dispositivos terapéuticos que manejamos.

La capacidad de la enfermería de elevar a la excelencia hasta el mínimo detalle en el cuidado y el paciente tan especial ante el que nos encontramos, el paciente pediátrico, nos impulsa a continuar dando el valor que merece cada cuidado. Lo habitual en nuestra labor diaria, por el hecho de serlo, no deja de ser único para cada uno de nuestros niños y sus familias.

El conocimiento de los dispositivos que manejamos, con mayor o menor grado de tecnificación, considerando las peculiaridades de nuestros pacientes pediátricos, es fundamental para ofertar un cuidado de calidad, basado en la seguridad y en la efectividad de las terapias que aplicamos.
