La dispensación de cuidados a los enfermos en fase terminal, cuando ya no se puede curar, adquiere cada vez mayor importancia dentro del sistema sanitario.

Las demandas de los pacientes y sus familias y el interés y preocupación de los profesionales sanitarios por evitar el sufrimiento en la etapa final de las enfermedades, muestra la creciente sensibilidad social y sanitaria que existe actualmente.

Fue una enfermera Británica, Cicely Saunders, en la década de los 60, quién estableció los modernos principios de lo que hoy conocemos como Cuidados Paliativos. Ella orientó su trabajo profesional hacia la búsqueda de soluciones específicas para cubrir las necesidades reales de los pacientes con enfermedades en fase terminal, cambiando radicalmente la manera de tratar y actuar de médicos y enfermeras.

Principios que hoy intentan recuperar, desde una perspectiva humanística, el acercamiento a una muerte tranquila, sin acciones terapéuticas innecesarias, dentro de un ambiente íntimo y de confianza, donde las familias vuelvan a tener un papel relevante cerca del paciente fomentado por la comunicación y dándose apoyo mutuo.

El confort, la calidad de vida son ahora  las metas a conseguir, siendo los propios pacientes, y no sus enfermedades, los verdaderos protagonistas.

El abordaje del paciente terminal debe hacerse multidisciplinarmente a través de los equipos de Cuidados Paliativos formados por distintos profesionales. Entre ellos, las enfermeras, como proveedoras de cuidados, constituyen una parte esencial dentro del equipo. No en vano, son las necesidades básicas del enfermo el centro de atención de la enfermería.

Pero para que estas necesidades sean cubiertas apropiadamente, es necesaria una formación adecuada. La falta de conocimientos sobre cómo conseguir una mejor calidad de vida para los pacientes en fase terminal supone una grave carencia en los profesionales sanitarios.
