Se estima que en el mundo se realizan más de 230 intervenciones quirúrgicas cada año y que estas han pasado de ser simples, inefectivas y seguras a complejas, efectivas y potencialmente peligrosas, convirtiendo este tema en un asunto de importancia mundial.

Las tasas de eventos adversos (EA) para los pacientes intervenidos quirúrgicamente siguen siendo inaceptablemente altas, a pesar de múltiples iniciativas a nivel nacional y mundial durante la última década. Estos incluyen el “100.000 Lives Campaign» (2005/2006) y “5 Million Lives Campaign” subsiguiente (2007/2008), desarrolladas por el Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), el “Surgical Care Improvement Poject” (2006) y Protocolo universal (2009) promovido por la Joint Commission, y el programa de la OMS “Safe Surgery Saves Lives Campaign” acompañado de la implementación a nivel mundial de la lista de verificación de la OMS quirúrgica de seguridad (2009).
